- [Fancy interactive Windows desktop!](https://sheffieldcomputerservices.co.uk/fancy-interactive-windows-desktop/): Just a quick note to share about how to have some funk moving images/videos on your Windows (10 or 11) desktop instead of the standard image or slideshow of images. Basically just download ‘Livey Wallpapers‘ from the Microsoft Store and select the background you’d like. You might also want to hide desktop icons by right-clicking on the desktop background and finding the option to hide desktop icons. - [Be careful setting a firmware password on a Mac!](https://sheffieldcomputerservices.co.uk/be-careful-setting-a-firmware-password-on-a-mac/): Just a quick word of caution in setting a firmware password on a Mac machine. If you forget the password, it can’t be easily reset or by passed. It’s impossible to remove without a chip replacement which many places can’t do (due to difficulty) or won’t do (due security/ethical reasons). Strangely, we’ve had a few customers very recently with this issue so thought it’s worth letting people know to avoid the problem by removing the password or making sure it’s not ever forgotten.

The usual cause of overheating is a clogged up heatsink and/or fan – dirt, hair, crumbs etc. block air flow so the fan cannot cool the heatsink which takes heat away from the CPU. In this case the laptop was getting extremely hot, too hot to hold for long, and the fan was working, loudly at top speed. As you can see from the pictures below, there was a lot of dust and dirt. - [Macbook Pro - Cracked Glass LCD Screen Replacement](https://sheffieldcomputerservices.co.uk/macbook-pro-cracked-glass-lcd-screen-replacement/): A fairly regular job that comes to us…replacement of the cracked glass on a MacBook Pro after a knock. This one was particularly tricky because the glass was completely fractured. It took a little long than usual, but this sometimes happens. The customer was happy with the work and price done, and we’re sure they’ll try to avoid it happening again.  
- [Silica Gel Balls in Headphone Jack!](https://sheffieldcomputerservices.co.uk/silica-gel-balls-in-headphone-jack/): This was an interesting job! The customer had unfortunately managed to get some of those small silica gel balls (the kind put in packaging to absorb moisture) into the headphone and microphone jacks of a laptop. We weren’t sure what the outcome would be, hoping it wouldn’t require replacement of jacks. Thankfully, after dismantling the laptop and carefully using a thin wire to poke at the balls through small holes at the back of the jacks, we were able to get the balls out without any other damage. These types of jobs are always interesting because they provide a new challenge!

We transferred the services to Sheffield Computer Services and got the email settings reconfigured without any loss of the customer’s data, and we charged a much more reasonable rate for the services then the old company – £150 per year saving!
